We’ve been very busy lately so I’m a bit late with this blog post. A few weeks ago, Serendipity Farm Sanctuary responded to a heartfelt plea for help from a family in Boone. Hurricane Helene had torn through their area, devastating homes, pastures, and shelters. Their small herd of beloved mixed-breed goats had been part of their family for years, but now had lost their shelter and fenced pasture in the storm. Desperate to find a safe place for their pets, Carl, Bella, and Beau. The family wanted to ensure the goats would not be sold for meat but instead would live out the remainder of their lives in peace. They reached out to us, hoping we could provide the sanctuary they needed. Of course, we were happy to help in any way we were able.
Early on a Thursday morning, we loaded our truck and set off. The drive to Boone revealed the heartbreaking aftermath of the hurricane. Furniture and belongings were piled high along the roadsides, evidence of homes that had been flooded. The landscape told the story of a river that had violently overflowed its banks, washing away roads and structures in its path. Fenced pastures were now open stretches of raveged land, no longer capable of containing animals, leaving livestock at risk and wandering.
Although the family reassured us that the main roads were safe, the side streets leading to their property were still in shambles. We hesitated as we approached the road where the goats were located—it hadn’t been repaired yet, and we weren’t sure our truck could make it. So, I walked ahead, taking in the extent of the damage and meeting two displaced pigs along the way, who were also victims of the storm, now roaming free.
With careful planning, we decided to slowly navigate the damaged road, our crates in tow, and I walked ahead of the truck to make sure the pigs stayed clear of our path. It was slow going, but we made it, and with relief, we successfully rescued the three goats. However, the pigs—likely belonging to someone in the area—remained behind, as we couldn't determine their owner. Still, we left with a sense of accomplishment, knowing we had helped as best we could.
Today, Carl, Bella, and Beau have settled in beautifully at the sanctuary, where they’ll never have to face such uncertainty again.
Some of Serendipity Farm Sanctuary's goat herd, whom we lovingly refer to as the "Welcoming Committee," eagerly gathered around the intake shelter for an informal "Meet & Greet", offering the new residents a warm and curious reception. It’s always heartwarming to witness how these animals naturally connect and welcome each other into their fold.
While the journey was filled with challenges, we are grateful to have played a small part in helping animals displaced by the storm. Carl, Bella, and Beau now have a new beginning, and we hope to continue being a beacon of hope for animals in need.
