The Great Cow Escape at Serendipity Farm Sanctuary

You know that morning jolt you get from a strong cup of coffee? Well, let me tell you, it’s got nothing on the jolt you get when you look outside and see the cows are out! Yes, that’s right, our beloved bovines decided to go on an early morning adventure.

Picture this: I’m standing there with my coffee, anticipating a calm start to this beautiful day, and I notice the cows are happily grazing … outside the pasture fence! Fortunately, they hadn’t gone far yet, but they were grazing while slowly on the move. How long had they been out? Who knows! But seeing cows even just outside the fence is enough for panic to set in … and these heifers were moving toward the road!

Herding cows back into the pasture can be a quite challenging – but this morning it was surprisingly easy for most of the herd. They had little objection to going home (into the pasture) when we opened the gate. However, Carolyn required a little bit more effort. Being our blind cow, Carolyn needs a little extra guidance. Thankfully, she’s a sucker for the sound of sweet feed being shaken. With a little coaxing and the irresistible promise of treats, she followed us back into the pasture with minimal distraction.

Upon investigation, we discovered that our adventurous bovines had managed to take down a full section of the fence. Fortunately, we had one extra section of fencing left over from an interior corral. Elysian and I quickly sprang into action, using it to make a sturdy repair. I have to give Elysian (Mimi) most of the credit for the sturdy repair, though in an emergency I'm pretty handy with bailing twine, duct tape, and zip ties!

Of course, fencing and fence posts are going to need reinforcement (and some replacing) as soon as time and finances permit. But for now, everyone is safely and happily grazing in the pasture, no worse for their little adventure.

Life at Serendipity Farm Sanctuary is never dull! From unexpected cow escapades to ensuring our sanctuary remains a safe haven for our rescued farm animals, there’s always something happening. We’re dedicated to providing compassionate care and a secure environment for all our residents, and moments like these remind us of the joys and challenges of sanctuary life.

Stay tuned for more updates from the farm sanctuary, and remember, if you ever want to help out with fencing and farm repairs – let us know! Until next time, happy grazing!
